Why You Should Join
Importance of Volunteering
VolunteerConnect is built on a simple idea: getting involved early matters. When students volunteer during high school, they build real skills, grow as leaders, and start to see how they can make a difference in their communities.
But not everyone has the same access to those opportunities. From our research, we discovered that schools in low-income areas are 26% less likely to offer service-learning programs, which means a lot of students miss out before they even get started. And that gap doesn’t just disappear later on. About 30% of college students volunteer, but only 11% of young adults who don’t go to college do. When people don’t have access early, they are much less likely to stay involved later.
Volunteering can also have a real impact on your future. In one survey, 53% of admissions officers said community service can make the difference between equally qualified applicants, and two-thirds said it shows a student’s values. Beyond college, volunteering helps people develop empathy and stronger connections, especially when they choose causes they actually care about.
A lot of students also don’t realize that their work can be recognized nationally through programs like the Presidential Volunteer Service Award and the Congressional Award, ways to promote student empowerment and work ethic through tangible recognition.
